Swedish Data Center News

Wrapping Up a Successful Year with SweDCI

2024 has been a productive and successful year for SweDCI. With new additions to our board, Sandra Karlsson (AWS) and Tomas Sokolnicki (Microsoft), we have gained fresh perspectives and ideas that have enriched our work. Furthermore, Isabelle Kemlin(RISE) has represented us on the EUDCA board, strengthening our collaboration with Europe's data center industries.

Throughout the year, both our members and board have actively represented Sweden and our industry in various forums and panels. Despite the hard work, we've also enjoyed many moments together, especially during our member meetings, which are always a source of inspiration. We are pleased to announce that we now have over 80 members and look forward to continued growth in 2025. The more we are, the stronger the association becomes, enabling more value-creating activities for all of us.

This year has also included important dialogues with the Swedish Government Offices, the Swedish Energy Agency, and the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority regarding reporting requirements for EED and NIS2. We want to thank you for the excellent collaboration and look forward to continuing this work in 2025.

Our Nordic collaboration has intensified, highlighted by a joint presence at the Datacloud Global Congress in Cannes together with our Nordic neighbors. We also launched the Nordic Datacenter Week as an annual activity to emphasize the importance of data centers to our welfare society. This collaboration culminated in the highly successful Nordic AI Forum in Stockholm in November, where nearly 200 participants from across the Nordics gathered. Ahead of the event, we published a special insert in Dagens Industri to highlight the societal benefits of our industry.

In 2024, our working groups have continued their efforts on important topics. It's inspiring to see so many of our members actively participating, and we hope even more of you will join. Currently, we have working groups focused on Policy, PR and Communication, Security, and Heat Recovery. Looking ahead to 2025, we aim to establish new groups for Education, Sustainability, and more.

Working groups are initiated and led by members, with the board providing support when needed. Their purpose is to dive deeper into topics that matter most to our members and, by extension, to the association as a whole.

Looking Ahead to 2025
We look forward to an intense and exciting year with continued Nordic collaboration and a strong focus on our Swedish members. The year will kick off with a member meeting at our member Enaco's premises on the 28 of January, and our annual meeting will be held on April 22 at Piperska Muren. Another member meeting is planned in conjunction with Nordic Datacenter Week, this will be held in Gothenburg. Swedish Datacenter Day will also take place later on int autumn/winter 2025– more details will follow.

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Nordic AI Infrastructure Forum – November 13, 2024

The Nordic AI Infrastructure Forum took place in Stockholm on November 13th, gathering over 180 industry professionals, researchers, and policymakers at Piperska Muren. This event, organized by all Nordic data center associations, focused on the vital role that artificial intelligence plays in shaping modern society and its implications for digital infrastructure.

The forum featured a dynamic lineup of keynote speeches, thought-provoking panel discussions, and interactive Q&A sessions. Speakers from leading tech companies, research institutions, and government agencies explored the impact of AI on various sectors, from healthcare and finance to sustainable energy and smart cities. The half-day event highlighted the growing need for robust, energy-efficient infrastructure to support AI development in the Nordic region, where sustainability and innovation are top priorities.

This forum was the culmination of two full days of collaboration among Nordic data center organizations. Together, they are working towards establishing the Nordics as a leader in AI-driven, sustainable digital infrastructure.

A big thank you goes out to everyone who participated and contributed to the event's success. Special recognition is owed to Isabelle Kemline for her outstanding leadership, ensuring that everything ran smoothly and that attendees left inspired and eager to drive positive change in the AI landscape.

Status of Sweden and Reporting for Data Centers According to EED

The government has now released a memorandum for consultation where reporting for data centers is addressed.

The Swedish Energy Agency has also published information related to this.
Since reporting must be conducted through the respective member state and legislation needs to be in place, Swedish operators will not be able to report until then.

You can find the Swedish Energy Agency's news and the draft legislation here:
Nya krav på rapportering för datacenter (energimyndigheten.se)

Hållbarhetskriterier för vissa bränslen och en ny reduktionsplikt - Regeringen.se

The legislative changes are proposed to come into effect on July 1, 2025, and responses to the consultation must be submitted to the Ministry of Climate and Enterprise by November 12, 2024.

We thank both the Government Offices and the Swedish Energy Agency for their good cooperation so far.
